How to make your apartment sound-friendly

What are reasonable quiet hours?
In an apartment building or residential area, peace and quiet are essential for pleasant communal living. But what exactly are reasonable quiet hours? Is there a fixed rule, or does it depend on the situation?

The answer is: there are general guidelines, but it is primarily about reasonableness and mutual respect.

Is there a fixed legal quiet period?
In Belgium, a night's rest is usually assumed to be between 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM. During this period, you must be extra careful with noise.
This does not mean you cannot make any sound at all, but rather that you must not cause abnormal nuisance.

What can you still do during quiet hours?
Normal living sounds remain permitted, such as:

  • Speaking softly
  • Showering
  • Using the toilet
  • Watching television at a normal volume

What is usually not accepted:

  • Loud music
  • Parties
  • Drilling or DIY work
  • Moving furniture
  • Prolonged noise

The difference lies in the volume, the duration, and the impact on neighbors.

What about during the day?
During the day, the rules are more flexible, but the principle of neighbor nuisance still applies. Noise is allowed, but it must not be excessive or disruptive.
DIY work or renovations are best carried out between:

  • 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM on weekdays
  • Limited hours during the weekend

Many apartment buildings have specific agreements regarding this in the internal rules.

What if a dispute arises?
In case of doubt, the principle of "abnormal neighbor nuisance" applies. This means a judge will consider:

  • The time
  • The frequency
  • The intensity of the noise
  • The reasonableness of the situation

A one-off party is different from noise every night.

What is the conclusion?
Reasonable quiet hours are usually between 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM. During this period, you must be extra considerate of your neighbors. More is permitted during the day, but even then, you must not cause excessive nuisance.

Living together does not require absolute silence, but it does require mutual respect and common sense.

You are allowed to live in your apartment. So are your neighbors.
