A worry-free holiday

Going on holiday? How to leave your apartment behind with peace of mind (and avoid nightmares upon your return)
Finally, time off. Your suitcase is packed, you have checked your passport three times, and the taxi is at the door. But wait a moment: have you thought about your apartment? Because while you are sipping cocktails by the pool, your flat is website waiting patiently. And it prefers to do so safely, dryly, and without any drama.
Here are the tips you certainly won't want to skip.
A summer storm can arrive faster than your weather forecast suggests. That lounger, that cushion, the flower pot, and the parasol you intended to "secure later" could end up on your neighbor's terrace during the next storm. Or worse, on a car below. Secure everything properly or store it away before you leave. Your neighbors will thank you, even if they don't know why.
You return after three weeks and open the fridge. Last month's yogurt greets you like an old friend: hairy and full of character. Dispose of anything that won't survive the holiday, set the fridge to a lower setting, and leave the door ajar if you empty it completely. And don't forget to take out the trash before you depart. Three-week-old yogurt in a warm kitchen isn't just a smell; it's an experience.
Standby mode still consumes power. And electricity carries a fire risk, however small. Unplug appliances you don't need, such as the television, coffee maker, chargers, and anything else usually left plugged in. Bonus: your energy bill will benefit too. Do set a timer on a lamp or two: a lit window in the evening makes the home look occupied, which is often enough to discourage unwanted visitors.
It seems obvious, but how many people have turned back halfway down the motorway because they weren't sure if they had locked the back door? Create a small routine: lock the door, close the windows, and lower the shutters. Also, let someone know you're away; a neighbor keeping an eye out is worth more than the best alarm system.
A reliable neighbor is worth their weight in gold. Ask if someone can collect your mail, water your plants, and keep an eye on things. Most neighbors are happy to help, especially if you promise to bring back a bottle from your destination. A small effort for them, great peace of mind for you.
A full mailbox screams to the outside world: "No one is home!" Ask a neighbor to empty it regularly, or have your mail forwarded via bpost. Small effort, great sense of security. And remember to put your newspaper subscription on hold in time.
Bonus tip: the most underrated tip of all time
Tell someone who truly knows where to find your spare key. Not ten people at once, so that no one remembers. Not in a secret drawer that even you might forget. One trusted person, with a key and a phone number. That is all.
And now for the most important part
Don't forget to send a postcard to your Property Manager. They work hard all year round for your building, the common areas, urgent repairs, and the neighbor's late-night water leak. A card from Tenerife or Tuscany? That will make their day. And who knows: they might handle your next meeting agenda just a little more favorably. We're not saying it, we're just implying it.
Have a great holiday!
The only thing left to forget is your worries. Have a wonderful holiday!
